To:  Georgia faculty, students and staff

We oppose the proposed budget cuts recommended by the Georgia General Assembly of $385 million of the University System of Georgia. These cuts will have negative implications on our education, and we propose that the Georgia General Assembly find alternative measures outside of higher education to supplement this proposal.

At a meeting on February 22, 2010 with state governors, Obama spoke about new efforts to improve education for college and for jobs.

Obama plans to create college and career-ready standards in the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Last year the president challenged states to develop standards and assessments that could encourage children to work hard to graduate from high school prepared for college and the workplace.

The president is calling for a redesigned Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The act aims to better teacher preparation to improve classroom instruction. The goal is to help states improve education to successfully prepare students for college and the workplace.

“America’s prosperity has always rested on how well we educate our children—but never more so than today,” said President Barack Obama.

“This is true for our workers, when a college graduate earns over 60 percent more in a lifetime than a high school graduate. This is true for our businesses, when according to one study; 6 in 10 say they simply can’t find qualified people to fill open positions.”

The NWS just advised that the latest model runs show the CSRA with a greater potential for snowfall than earlier forecast.  They have issued a Winter Storm Watch for 2/12/10…calling for 1 to 3 inches of snowfall.   The NWS says this is a conservative forecast…and could see even higher amounts of accumulation.

Remember that the bridges and overpasses will freeze and there could be other areas of frozen water on roadways…so stay safe and stay home tomorrow night unless you have to be out.

WINTER STORM WATCH.

AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE WILL MOVE EAST ACROSS THE GULF OF MEXICO TONIGHT.& ACROSS CNTL FL & INTO THE ATLANTIC FRIDAY AND FRI NIGHT. MOISTURE WILL DRIFT NO. INTO OUR REGION FRIDAY AFTERNOON & EXIT THE REGION LATE FRI NIGHT. PRECIPITATION WILL FALL IN THE FORM OF A RAIN & SNOW MIXTURE FRIDAY AFTERNOON.EVENTUALLY BECOMING ALL SNOW LATE DAY FRI OR FRIDAY EVENING. THE SNOW WILL END AFTER MIDNIGHT FRI NIGHT. SURFACE TEMPS WILL BE ABOVE FREEZING AT THE ONSET OF PRECIPITATION AND FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AS THE SNOW FALLS. THIS WILL LEAD SOME OF THE SNOW TO MELT INITIALLY.BUT SURFACE TEMPS WILL FALL BELOW FREEZING FRI EVENING LEADING TO ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS.& LEAD TO ANY WET SLUSHY SNOW IN PLACE TO FREEZE. THIS WILL MAKE DRIVING HAZARDOUS.
